Mr. Vernon Reece Byrd , age 86, of Harmony Lane, Greensboro died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at his home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday 11:00 AM, July 28, 2010 at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Mathis and Rev. Hillary Wood officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial with military honors by Post #1142 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Vernon Reece Byrd was born in Wilkes County, January 25, 1924 to Brady Columbus and Vesta Wood Byrd. He made a profession and joined Bethany Baptist Church around 1940. After graduating from Mountain View High School in 1943, he was inducted into the army . He reported for active duty August 31 at Fort Jackson, S.C. and then joined the 63rd infantry division in Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi for basic training. He then transferred to the 83rd Infantry Division in Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. Later he was sent to Camp Shanks, NY, then sent to Europe arriving in Liverpool, England April 18, 1944. On June 27, 1944, he was sent to France landing at Omaha Beach and relieving the 101st Air Born division. Fighting with CO E 330th Infantry Regiment, he was awarded two combat Battle Stars, one for Normandy and one for Northern France. He was also awarded the Good Conduct Metal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the E.A.M.E. Medal and the World War 11 Victory Metal. After a brief hospital stay in France, he worked in various post offices in France and Germany. He was discharged March 16, 1946 and went to work for Chatham Manufacturing Company. After that he worked for Lester Woods Sawmill, The Coca Cola Bottling Company, Lineberry Foundry and Machine Company. He received a diploma in advanced accounting at Clevenger College of Business Administration. He then accepted a job with the United States Postal Service and moved to Guilford County September 8, 1958. He retired from that job in September, 1984 where he lived until his death.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Myers Byrd; a son, Bryce Wendell Byrd; a sister, Vermell Byrd and a brother, Elmer Byrd.

He is survived by: one son, Kenny Lee Byrd of Greensboro; one daughter, Nancy Byrd Bridges of Greensboro; three grandsons, Ronald Dowd Bridges, III, Matthew Vernon Bridges, Nathan Adam Byrd; and two great-grandchildren, Adriana Bridges, Ryland Bridges; three sisters, Edith Woods of North Wilkesboro, Ruth Roope of Thurmond, Carol Thiesing of Hays; two brothers, Elton Byrd and Dwight Byrd both of North Wilkesboro; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and special neighbors Gary and Patsy Joyce.
